– ‘IE’ Unit

Designed: IE 2 – 2004 / IE3 – 2006

Digital-interaction emulators,

A DFM design project t odevelop product casings for in-house-developed product: a digital interaction emulator.  Client:  Programme for Advanced Interactive Prototype Research (PAIPR).

My design process involved close liaison with the PAIPR engineers to garner deep understanding of the product requirements and user needs.

Sketches, foam prototypes, CAD visualisations and rapid prototyping were utilised to develop the design and communicate ideas with the client.

A stereolithography prototype was made for evaluation and test-fitting of the final design.  The informed minor modifications, including the addition of snap-assembly details and reduction of screw bosses to aid assembly.

My design aspires to a similar school of thought as the clean, honest modernist designs of Dieter Rams’ and Dieterich Lubs’ products for Braun.

20 units were manufactured in-house using silicone tooling.

The units have been sold to commercial and research-based organisations such as Sony Ericsson, Samsung Design Europe and Alloy to aid sofware interaction design.

The IE3 was short-listed for a Product Design Award at the 2007 Cardiff Design Festival.
